Bioethics of Video Games
Who has the right to decide whether a living organism gets to live or die? Is the information we obtain significant enough to kill a living organism? These are questions that scientists often stumble across while conducting scientific studies. However, it is inevitable that animal studies must be done if we want to improve our scientific knowledge and advance in medicine and healthcare. It is a very tough choice to make, and many people often ask “Is it the right thing to do? Is it ethical? Who is responsible, and for what?” These questions are crucial to the understanding of bioethics.
Ethics can be defined in many different ways due to the many types of ethics; however the common definition for ethics revolves around the idea of philosophy related to human conducts initially caused by the right or wrong of certain actions. Ethics can be philosophical because each person has their individual mindset that can affect a group’s behavior. Bioethicists are similar to ethicists, but bioethicists focus more on modern medicine and healthcare. Bioethicists are concerned with basic human rights, such as life and health based on human actions in the society. Unlike scientific studies with measurable results or only one right conclusion, bioethical research will not come to a conclusion of a right or wrong answer; instead, bioethical research will come up with many conclusions that are neither right or wrong just some can be more valid. Although bioethics study science, each scientific study is approached with bioethical inquiry focusing on what people should do, rather than asking scientific questions.
The difference between “is” and “should” is what differentiates a scientific question from a bioethical question. A scientific question might be “what is the side effect of a drug on athletes?” While a bioethical question might be “should athletes be allowed to use the drug?” It is important for scientists to understand the bioethics and significance of each scientific study because this can help enhance the medical technology and healthcare in specific ways. When conducting scientific studies, understanding the basics of bioethics can increase awareness of health workers about the best medical practices and allow the health workers to understand the patient or the test subject as a living organism.
Now knowing the basic understanding of bioethics and how it differentiates from scientific questions, I would like to talk about the bioethical research of video games. Video games have always been questioned about whether it should be played or not. Although many adults and parents say that video games is not healthy and should not be played most of the time, bioethical research answers that video games should be played because of the beneficial effects it has on each individual’s life and health. In this bioethical analysis, there is no right or wrong answer to whether video games should be played, but the conclusion is drawn from the opinions of many people’s individual mindset. Bioethical research about video games gives a more convincing reason of why video games should be played because the types of video games and the way video games are played were observed by many different bioethicists.
However, anything done in excess is damaging. It is a valid argument that there are many people who are addicted to video games, die and even commit crimes because of video games. Many factors can contribute to those things, such as the person’s mental state, and how he/she grown up. However, in this project, we will focus on the effects of video games on people who are mentally stable. We will discuss about the effects of video games on our societies, rather than how certain individual who are mentally unstable may react to them.
