If you haven't grown up in a cave, you have probably heard of super Mario and maybe even played it. However, at the time, you probably didn't realize the effect it had on your brain right? Action games provide many cognitive benefits for the brain, including faster reaction time, increase in contrast sensitivity function and improved eyesight. You might wonder 'What?! I have always thought that video games worsen eyesight.' However, studies have shown that gamers became up to 58% better at perceiving fine contrast differences. In an article by Robert Roy Britt, he states "We've found that action video games train the brain to process the existing visual information more efficiently, and the improvements last for months after game play stopped." Beside the benefits mentioned, action video games were also observed to increase gray matter, which is linked to higher intelligence and muscle control skill. In a recent study, it was observed that playing Super Mario 64 for 30 minutes a day over two months increased brain size of specific regions. "Playing Super Mario 64 for 30 minutes a day over two months increased adult volunteers' brain volume in their right hippocampus, the right prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum."
